Phishing is a type of cyber attack where attackers randomly send emails to a broad audience in an attempt to trick people into providing sensitive information such as account credentials, personal details, SSN's etc.
During the COVID19 pandemic there has been a ramp up of Phishing and Spear Phishing (targeted versus random) attacks as fraudsters try to take advantage of the current environment and dislocated working conditions.
Corona Virus related "theme" attacks have increased dramatically with brand impersonation, scamming, malware related health links and business email compromise.
Barracuda Networks studies saw an almost 700% increase in these type of attacks between February and April of this year.
The "supply chain" of information that we rely on from business vendors, work colleagues, customers, family etc is having vulnerabilities exposed as many parts of the chain are operating from remote locations such as "work at home". The ability therefore to pop into a colleagues office and check a piece of information for validity is not possible and we're relying upon most of our information and interaction coming in the form of email and social media platforms.
Thus we need to be ever more vigilant to ensure we are clicking on messages and emails and social media links from trusted sources.
Personal safety at this time isn't only about our health. Identity Thieves and Fraudsters are out in force taking advantage of the present situation to do us harm.
As always, here at ID Resolution we stand ready to assist you and to answer any questions you may have.
